I've been thinking over the action/...Me again!

I've been thinking over the action/reaction technique and I finally have the "why" to my question of why I don't enjoy some of the ebooks I bought recently. I thought it was because I was reading about characters with multiple personality disorders (their moods change almost with each line of dialogue! From sadness, to giggling, to chirping, to confusion, to teasing, etc. etc.) Now I see it's got everything to do with action/reaction. People's moods don't change that swiftly because events don't change that swiftly, although the level of intensity of the mood will escalate, depending on the circumstances. And it's their mood that is going to influence their reactions - how they speak, act, and what they say.

On another note, I'm realising that just because an ebook has a good cover and an interesting blurb, and the ebook is (technically) published, the writing may not be all that great. It's annoying, but I suppose I can learn from how not to do it, just as much as I can from how to do it...

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13789345714956252856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-961575487165132975.post-39092504304847831382014-07-19T23:19:45.091+10:002014-07-19T23:19:45.091+10:00I'd prefer to read historical novels with era-...I'd prefer to read historical novels with era-appropriate narrative/vocabulary. That's the fun of reading historical novels - the way they spoke and wrote brings the characters to life. And they way people spoke and wrote has a big part to play in who they were. Because language affects thought.

I know there are modern writers who write historical novels in a contemporary style, and while they might be entertaining, the novels are lacking, for me. A huge part of reading is the escapism into another world and time. If the language isn't appropriate for that time, then the escapism isn't complete. That's how it is for me. :)

Congratulations on that massive wordcount for Virtually Ideal! That's a huge achievement. There's nothing like having a good example to demonstrate how it's done (or not done, in this case).

If we have an agenda as writers ("this HAS to happen"), then the action/reaction may get overlooked. I'm going to make sure I watch out for this technique in my own writing!

I might have a go at rewriting this scene with the reactions of Ping and Danzi. I use the Enneagram personality profiles for my characters, so knowing my characters' Enneagram types helps me know how they would react, what motivates them, what they fear, how they react. So that's probably the main one--knowing which of the nine types they are, since that helps a lot with figuring out their behavior.

I don't usually do a warm-up before I write, though sometimes I'll read through what I wrote the day before. I also try to keep up with my morning pages, three pages of free-writing, a practice I learned from Julia Cameron's "The Artist's Way." I'll have to try doing a warm-up similar to the ones you mentioned and see what I discover. Thanks for the suggestion!Denise D. Now that I work full time caring for girls, I can generally get 3,500 before work and usually the extra 1,500 after they've gone to bed, if it hasn't been a stressful shift.
But a lot of it is just training to sit down and stay there. I would like to work back up to 7,500-10,000 a day. That is a good pace to keep moving through a story without forgetting all the little details. I don't stop and wonder if I could retell it in a stronger way, maybe changing the setting, or how characters react.
